Weaving Mutation
Weaving Mutation est une performance de l’artiste Rose-Mahé Cabel pensée en trois tableaux, qui met en scène la naissance et les mutations d’une araignée. Rose-Mahé Cabel établit une relation formelle directe entre le fil, le chant et le texte dans la lignée des mythologies du récit, de Pénélope au fil d’Ariane en passant par Arachné, les Parques et les quenouilles moyenâgeuses.
Weaving Mutation is a performance by artist Rose-Mahé Cabel in three tableaux, depicting the birth and mutations of a spider. Rose-Mahé Cabel establishes a direct formal relationship between thread, song and text in the tradition of storytelling mythologies, from Penelope and Ariadne’s thread to Arachne, the Fates and medieval cattails.
Figure de nos cauchemars l’araignée fait l’objet d’un imaginaire ancré dans la peur. Pourtant l’artiste signe ici un manifeste interspéciste en sortant l’animal de son rôle de support métaphorique pour en faire une alliée dans la dissidence. L’araignée entame notamment une litanie issue d’un chant populaire rural anglophone qu’elle invite à reprendre parmi l’audience qui l’entoure tel un rituel de conjuration des récits productivistes du capitalisme.
The spider is the stuff of our nightmares, the subject of an imagination rooted in fear. Yet here the artist is signing an interspeciesist manifesto by taking the animal out of its role as a metaphorical support and turning it into an ally in dissent. In particular, the spider begins a litany taken from a popular English-language rural song, which it invites the audience around it to repeat, like a ritual to ward off the productivist narratives of capitalism.
