HERSTORY est un néologisme et concept utilisé dans le courant des années 1970 afin de proposer un prisme féministe à l’Histoire. Le premier usage du terme est attribué à Robin Morgan, poète, journaliste et militante féministe dans son ouvrage Sisterhood is powerfull.

Le concept soulève deux questions: d’une part les femmes sont en grande majorité absentes des récits historiques, la sélection des faits rapportés et étudiés par les historiens hiérarchise et privilégie les figures masculines et les événements historiques portés par les hommes. D’autres part le concept sous-tend que toute Histoire est un récit, qui part d’un point de vue, et que le point de vue des femmes est en grande partie invisibilisé. Le concept peut aussi être mobilisé pour parler d’une histoire plus ciblée des mouvements féministes.
The concept raises two issues: on the one hand, women are largely absent from historical narratives, and the selection of facts reported and studied by historians hierarchizes and privileges male figures and historical events borne by men. On the other hand, the concept implies that all history is a narrative, starting from a point of view, and that women’s point of view is largely invisible. The concept can also be mobilized to speak of a more targeted history of feminist movements.
Le concept porte bien son nom puisqu’il s’agit d’une altération du terme history (his story) pour y insérer une perspective féministe (her story).

Herstory vise donc tout à la fois à réhabiliter les figures féminines mais aussi à mener une historiographie (étude des méthodes de sélection, d’étude et de narration les grands événements et tournants historiques) dans une perspective féministe, d’en révéler les rapports de genre, de parfois compléter voire nuancer, peut-être même contredire les récits dominants.
Herstory aims not only to rehabilitate female figures, but also to conduct historiography (the study of methods for selecting, studying and narrating major historical events and turning points) from a feminist perspective, revealing gender relations, sometimes complementing or even nuancing, perhaps even contradicting dominant narratives.
Comme toujours un concept est soumis à critique. Certains milieux universitaires déploient une méfiance vis à vis des historiographies féministes, dénonçant une réécriture forcée de l’histoire pour répondre à des enjeux idéologiques. D’autres critiques visent plutôt à souligner que le mouvement a souvent privilégié les perspectives féministes blanches occidentales, dans une vision féministe libérale, invitant à complexifier les récits et inclure les perspectives féminines non blanches et non occidentales.
As always, a concept is subject to criticism. Some academic circles are wary of feminist historiographies, denouncing a forced rewriting of history to meet ideological challenges. Other critics point out that the movement has often privileged white, Western feminist perspectives within a liberal feminist vision, calling for more complex narratives and the inclusion of non-white, non-Western female perspectives.
